Rack vs Cage: Which Colocation Space Do You Need?

A rack suits compact deployments, while a cage provides a larger private area for multiple cabinets, added separation and controlled growth.
The difference between a rack and a cage
A rack is a standard cabinet used to mount servers, switches, storage and other equipment. It is measured in rack units, written as U, with a full cabinet commonly providing about 42U of usable vertical space. A cage is a physically separated area within a data hall that can contain several racks and associated equipment. The cage may use mesh walls, dedicated access controls and customer-specific layouts. Both options sit inside the provider’s secure facility and use its power, cooling and connectivity, but they differ in scale, privacy, flexibility and cost.
When a rack is the better option
A rack is usually the most practical starting point for small and medium deployments. It works well when equipment fits into one or two cabinets, power density is moderate and the customer does not require a private working area. Buyers may choose a quarter rack, half rack or full rack depending on availability. A rack is easier to price and deploy because the provider already has a standard cabinet layout. It can also reduce unnecessary space costs. However, customers should confirm usable depth, weight limits, power feeds, cable access and whether they can install non-standard equipment.
When a cage makes sense
A cage becomes useful when a business needs several racks, stronger physical separation or room for staged expansion. It can support custom rack layouts, network distribution cabinets, secure storage and dedicated access permissions for different teams or contractors. Larger organisations may also prefer cages for audit, regulatory or internal governance reasons. A cage does not automatically create a higher security classification, but it adds another physical boundary inside the data hall. The commercial commitment is normally larger because the customer reserves floor area, power capacity and often a minimum number of racks.
Power and cooling matter more than floor space
Choosing between a rack and cage should not be based only on how many servers you own. Modern equipment, especially GPU systems, can consume far more power per rack than traditional enterprise servers. A single high-density cabinet may require specialised cooling or a different section of the facility. Ask the provider for maximum supported kilowatts per rack, power-feed options and any restrictions on equipment placement. In a cage, average and peak density also matter because heat must be managed across the entire footprint. Space without sufficient power or cooling has limited value.
A practical selection method
List every device you plan to install, its rack-unit size, depth, weight and maximum power draw. Add network panels, cable managers, spare capacity and at least 20 to 30 per cent allowance for realistic growth. Then decide whether you need private storage, workspace, customer-controlled access or non-standard layouts. A single rack may be enough today, but contracting two adjacent racks can be smarter than moving into a cage too early. Ask for expansion rights and nearby capacity in writing. The best choice balances present requirements with an achievable migration path.
